The American Soybean Association opened the Asia Subcontinent office in New Delhi, India in September 1996. Upon its formation in 2005, USSEC assumed responsibility for this office. All of USSEC's operations in this region are marketed under the ASA-IM brand. The Asia Subcontinent office conducts seminars and workshops throughout South Asia to promote soybean utilization in the food and feed sectors.
In the food sector and primarily in India, USSEC promotes the manufacturing of soy foods by soy processors and food manufacturers. USSEC occasionally provides initial marketing support for new soy-based food products. Products currently on the market include wheat-soy flour, soymilk, tofu (soya paneer), health supplements of pharmaceutical industries, soy nuts (snacks), soy papad (flat chip), bakery products, soy bari (nuggets and granules), and soybean oil. USSEC also helps existing soy processors through provision of a quality seal that endorses high quality tested products.
In the feed sector, USSEC helps to promote utilization of soybean meal, expeller processed soybean oil meal and full fat soybeans in poultry, dairy and aquaculture feeds as a source of protein and energy. USSEC regularly publishes technical bulletins on various subjects and participates in various national and international poultry, dairy, and general feed and related exhibitions. Soya feed products, which USSEC promotes, include soybean meal, full fat soybeans, soybean oil meal, and soybean as part of concentrate feed supplements.

Middle East and Africa

www.asaimmea.org

History and General Information

The American Soybean Association opened the Middle East and Africa office, located in Istanbul, Turkey, in 1998. Upon its formation in 2005, USSEC assumed responsibility for this office. All of USSEC's operations in this region are marketed under the ASA-IM brand. The office serves 37 countries including the primary U.S markets of Turkey, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, Egypt, Libya, Azerbaijan, Saudi Arabia, and United Arab Emirates (Dubai). USSEC's focus in this region is to build the market through programs that focus on purchasing, crushing, soy oil refining, fullfat soybean meal, feed formulation, poultry, dairy, aquaculture, soy flour, and soy food.

Industry Statistics

The major U.S. soybean markets of this region are:
  • Egypt (#8 worldwide)
  • Turkey (#11)
  • Israel (#13)
  • Syria (#15)
  • MY 2007/08 was a record year, with 2.188 MMT of U.S. soybean exports to the region as a whole (in MY 2006/07 exports were 2.064 MMT). The above four major markets accounted for 95% of these exports.

The U.S. share of soybean imports into the region was 65% in MY 2007/08. Compared to MY 2006/07, soybean exports to the region are up by 6%. This increase in the sale of U.S. soybeans into the region has been partially driven by the opening of several new, large crushing plants. At the same time, the opening of these plants has slowed imports of both meal and oil. U.S. soybeans remain more competitive than U.S. meal, so the ongoing shift from a regional meal market to a bean market is a positive development in terms of future overall U.S. soy complex market share.

Commercial sales of value enhanced U.S. soy flour have increased at a higher than expected rate, with tonnage increasing from 3,000 MT in MY 2006/07 to 4,555 MT in MY 2007/08.

    Southeast Asia

    History and General Information

USSEC Southeast Asia has a primary office located in the Republic of Singapore with four regional offices located in Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, and Philippines. The Singapore office also extends its efforts into Malaysia. The American Soybean Association opened the Singapore office in 1979 to serve the Southeast Asia region. Upon its formation in 2005, USSEC assumed responsibility for these offices. All of USSEC's operations in this region are marketed under the ASA-IM brand.
Southeast Asia is a growth market for soybeans and soybean meal ranking as the U.S.'s 5th and 3rd, respectively, largest export customer worldwide. The crushing and soyfood industries will continue to rely on soybean imports to meet their needs as local production in the region is static. The feed and livestock industries are expected to grow by a healthy 10-15% over the next few years. This will drive increasing demand for soybean meal; and as poultry, livestock, and aquaculture producers become larger and more technically sophisticated, that demand will shift increasingly to higher quality dehulled soy meal. The use of full-fat soybean meal is also an expanding market.

    Industry Statistics
    • Over the past five years, overall soy import demand has grown 22%, with soybean meal imports increasing 36%.
    • Indonesia is the 6th largest U.S. soybean customer worldwide purchasing almost 1 million metric ton this past year, equating to approximately 85% of the total market share.
    • With a population of 220 million people, worldwide soybean consumption is among the highest in the region at almost 25 pounds per capita, primarily in the form of tempe and tofu.
    • The Philippines is a growth market with soybean meal imports increasing 35% over the past five years.

In this market, the largest consumer is the crushing industry that processes 1.8 million for oil and meal, 200,000 – 350,000 metric tons are for full fat soy production and 250,000 – 400,000 metric tons are for foods.
